Managers Lament: Have Strategy, Need Direction
In a recent article Theresa Welbourne, Research Professor with CEO, discusses the implications of her ongoing Leadership Pulse study findings in addition to data from several case studies. Results show that leaders are finding their company strategies useless in helping them navigate day-to-day work. If these findings hold any bit of truth, then perhaps our models of making strategy are broken. Is it time to reconsider the usefulness of a 5-year plan, fitting corporate, business unit and functional strategies, linking employee performance to some drilled down version of goals based on strategy? Is the world moving too fast? Is business too global?
