The August get-together of our sustainability network was co-sponsored and hosted by the Nance College of Business, Cleveland State University, on Friday, August 7. It was a mini conference, which included learning and community-building activities. We plan to follow this network meeting with others in 2010.

The major focus of this meeting was on learning from diverse and loosely related sustainability activities in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is a fine example of a city where there has been a network of activities that mutually reinforce each other and move a city/region forward toward a sustainable future. In Cleveland, this has involved companies that are headquartered in and/or doing major business in Cleveland, public agencies, health care, the Port, government, NGO's, foundations, and universities.

Participants explored organizing approaches that lead to synergy, leverage, and acceleration of impact. Many organizations are now working as a part of loosely related networks like this in many communities, so a deep dive exploration of such a network is useful and instructive. Participants shared their experiences in working as part of various other communities.
