This session was an introduction to the 2009 leadership pulse program and reviewed overall highlights from 2008. The Leadership Pulse is a global network of managers and leaders, learning from each other via frequent, short pulse dialogues (our word for surveys) and is conducted by Dr. Theresa M. Welbourne, our newest Research Professor at the Center for Effective Organizations.

The unique learning experience is based on the real-time and ongoing nature of the benchmarking data, allowing participants to benchmark trends vs. point-in-time data. Traditional benchmarking is done by comparing data from a point-in-time experience (e.g. today) with a data base that is often 3 - 5 years old. This is like comparing your stock price today to the average stock price of your competition over the last 3 - 5 year. Thus, the opportunity to see data today from other firms is unique in the world of research and learning.

The project grew out of the research and technology development work that Dr. Welbourne has been doing for the last 20 years, focusing on how to improve organization performance through people. The Leadership Pulse Dialogue goes out every 2 -3 months to a sample of about 12,000 leaders. During 2008, the learning focused on leader energy, leadership confidence (in their own businesses and themselves), rewards that are valued by leaders and managers, relational capital vs. human capital and the impact of each on individual and firm performance, and growth prospects for the year (success stories for increasing sales and improving customer service).

Lessons from high performing firms are extracted and provided to enable leadership conversations in your own organizations.
