Join us online for this three-module learning program, which will highlight the necessary skills and thought models associated with being a persuasive and effective HR leader.

 

persuasion-conger.jpgModule 1: Enhancing Your Persuasion Skills with Jay Conger

In this session with leadership expert Jay Conger, you will learn how to enhance your persuasion skills. Based on his research on the persuasion abilities of highly effective leaders, Jay will discuss the tactics that are critical to successful persuasion. You will learn how to position your initiatives so that stakeholders are far more receptive to your ideas and requests. Specifically, you will learn about the four components that make for effective persuasion:

  • Building your credibility through powerful substitutes
  • Framing your initiative or request for common ground
  • Devising more compelling positions to persuade
  • Connecting on an emotional level

While HR professionals spend a great deal of time and effort learning the process of persuasion, and how to become more trusted, respected, and credible, the process of persuasion is only one part of success. A key component is the content of the persuasive message. In particular, John will discuss how HR can enhance its effectiveness by learning about the "mental models" already used by their clients, and how those proven models can be a powerful persuasive tool for HR-related issues.

Key issues to be addressed:

  • HR as a business partner: How can HR make it happen? What does it look like? What does HR need to bring to the table?
  • How can HR set the table for being a strategic partner?
  • How does HR interact with their clients? What are the ways to define the relationship?

 

Interaction with the Faculty

The course will kick-off with a live webinar featuring Ian Ziskin and Ed Lawler, on August 4, 10-11 am Pacific Time. The audio recording and PDF of the slide deck will be made available to course participants.

Jay and John will have posted "office hours" via Instant Messenger. They will chat online and answer questions from participants. They will also answer participant questions via email.

There will be a "homework assignment" for both Jay's and John's video modules that participants can complete.

There will be a closing interactive webinar with all participants and John, Jay and Ed on September 17, 9-10 am PT. This will also be recorded for course participants to access.

 

Accessing the Modules

Each module is a one-hour video. All 3 class modules will be available online from August 2 - September 24, 2010. Participants can access the class modules at their convenience - at any time and in whatever order they prefer - during that period.
