New Directions for the Human Resources Organization: An Organization Design Approach
First published in 1996, this report presents findings of a 1995 study that examined the human resources function in 130 large companies to see whether changes in the business environment and strategy of the corporation were leading to changes in practice and organization of the human resources function. The underlying hypothesis was that as corporations adopt new strategies and redesign themselves to deal with the competitive pressures they are feeling, their human resources organizations will be redesigning themselves to support the changing business.
A follow-up study was conducted in 1998 and the findings are presented in "Creating a Strategic Human Resources Organization", a monograph just published by CEO in 2000. (See CEO book list.)
