Reward Innovations in Fortune 1000 Companies
This paper summarizes data on reward innovations from a unique sample of large U.S. firms, based on survey data collected in 1987, 1990, and 1993. It examines changes in the use of rewards for performance (for example, gainsharing plans, employee stock ownership plans, and team incentives) and rewards supportive of employee involvement (for example, all-salaried pay, pay for knowledge and skill, flexible benefits). It reviews data from the 1993 study indicating that a majority of firms using each practice report it to be successful. Finally, the study examines how the use of high involvement practices such as self-managing work teams is related to the use of reward innovations.
