Designing for Human + AI Work: Moving Beyond Performative Adoption to Purposeful Work Redesign

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 9am PST | 12pm EST | 5pm GMT (1 hour duration)
In partnership, The Center for Effective Organizations (CEO) & Organization Design Forum (ODF) present Designing for Human + AI Work: Moving Beyond Performative Adoption to Purposeful Work Redesign.
Organizations are moving quickly to adopt AI, but adding technology to work that has not been clearly designed can accelerate confusion just as easily as it accelerates performance.
In this interactive session, OPM organization design practitioners Robert Stevens and Tey Lundy will share lessons emerging from an ongoing federal organization design engagement and explore a practical question: What has to be true about the work before AI can support it responsibly and effectively?
Using a live case, current research, and participant discussion, we will examine the organizational conditions behind effective human + AI work—including workflow clarity, decision rights, governance, institutional knowledge, trust, and the role of human judgment. This is intentionally work in progress rather than a presentation of a finished solution, and we welcome the experience and perspectives of fellow practitioners.
What Participants Will Explore
- Why AI readiness is also an organization-design readiness question.
- How making work visible, governed, and learnable creates stronger conditions for AI-enabled work.
- Where OD practitioners can contribute before, during, and after AI implementation.
- How to recognize conditions that should trigger scale, redesign, pause, or stop.
- Practical questions practitioners can take back to their own organizations and clients.
