It’s a Great Time to be a Physician: Building a Healthcare System that Works

February 13, 2013

Weisz, J., Mohrman, S. A., and McCracken, A. (Second River Healthcare Press, 2012)

A first-hand account of the changes being demanded of the U.S. healthcare system, this book is written by Dr. Jeffrey Weisz for his fellow physicians. Weisz is the former head of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, the physician arm of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, and current head of Northwest Permanente. The book draws on the experiences of physicians throughout the system who have led the Southern California Region to national preeminence on many measures of healthcare quality and outcomes. It looks at the shifting landscape of U.S. healthcare today and describes eight major trends that healthcare practitioners will be faced with – if not now, then in the near future. It also draws on the experiences of many other innovative healthcare systems to give readers a plethora of examples that show how we can adapt to and build upon these trends to create a better, more sustainable healthcare system for everyone, including physicians, patients, and payers. The book is part of CEO’s Organizing for Sustainable Healthcare initiative.
